INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO REMOVE CURRENT TAIL HOUSING<\/strong><\/span>& INSTALL NEW MDL Tail Housing MD-510-1000 & -1001\"\"<\/strong><\/span> Here are the simple steps:<\/strong><\/span>Transmission out of vehicle and oil drained.<\/strong><\/span>With a 13mm socket \u2013 remove the shifter.<\/strong><\/span>use a 5\/32 punch \u2013 drive out the roll pin holding the offset block to the rail.<\/strong><\/span>with a 15mm socket \u2013 remove 8 tail housing bolts.<\/strong><\/span>Use a Hammer \u2013 knock off old tail housing hitting just below the shifter bolt threads, while holding the offset lever down with your thumb.<\/strong><\/span>Inspect \u2013 case cover o-ring; should be soft and no cracks.<\/strong><\/span>with an 8mm socket \u2013 remove case cover bolts<\/strong><\/span>Use a\u00a0 Large flat-tip screwdriver \u2013 pry up on opposite corners until the cover is loose and SLIDE cover to the passenger side and lift up.<\/strong><\/span>Inspect \u2013 nylon fork pads.<\/strong><\/span>Pay Attention \u2013 to the position of the ring around the selector’s finger in the case cover: All the steps go against the case cover.<\/strong><\/span>use a 5\/32 punch \u2013 on the shift rail\u2026 from the neutral position turn the shift rail to raise the pointer finger up and slide the shift rail towards the back of the cover and then rotate down and partially drive out the SHORT roll-pin. Rotate up and finish driving out the short roll pin.<\/strong><\/span>Clean \u2013 all mating surfaces and oiled surfaces with carb cleaner.<\/strong><\/span>File \u2013 as necessary mating surfaces to remove high spots.<\/strong><\/span>Clean \u2013 all mating surfaces.<\/strong><\/span>Silicone \u2013 Permatex Ultra-Grey or Ultra- Black:\u00a0 apply a bead, even it out with your finger along a single mating surface.\u00a0 \u00a0No gaskets.<\/strong><\/span>Installation is the reverse of removal.<\/strong><\/span> Shim check \u2013 once tail and cover are re-installed, use a dead-blow hammer to set the input shaft and main shaft bearings by smacking them each a couple of times.<\/strong><\/span>Grab the input shaft and bearing retainer, try and wiggle side-to-side.<\/strong><\/span>Rotate input shaft in both directions 2-3 full turns.<\/strong><\/span>No side-to-side movement and input shaft spins\/rotates freely\u2026 no re-shimming required.<\/strong><\/span>No side-to-side movement and the input shaft is difficult to turn\u2026 remove shims.<\/strong><\/span>Yes, there is a side-to-side movement\u2026 add shim.<\/strong><\/span> Shimming – Remove 4 bolts in the retainer, pry off retainer, maintain input shaft in trans.<\/strong><\/span>Clean \u2013 all mating surfaces.<\/strong><\/span>Add or remove shim based on shim check.<\/strong><\/span>Install bearing retainer and TWO opposite bolts snug.<\/strong><\/span>Repeat shim checks until there is no side-to-side movement and input shaft spins\/rotates freely.<\/strong><\/span> Remove the retainer and two bolts.<\/strong><\/span>Clean \u2013 all mating surfaces.<\/strong><\/span>Apply Silicone sealant inside the bolt circle.<\/strong><\/span>Apply sealant to threads of bearing retainer bolts.<\/strong><\/span>Install bearing retainer and FOUR bolts.<\/strong><\/span>Torque 12-15 ft lbs.<\/strong><\/span>Use a dead-blow hammer to set the input shaft and main shaft bearings again by smacking them each a couple of times.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
