{"id":48893,"date":"2020-06-08T17:00:20","date_gmt":"2020-06-08T23:00:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.moderndriveline.com\/resources\/?p=48893"},"modified":"2020-06-08T17:00:20","modified_gmt":"2020-06-08T23:00:20","slug":"manual-transmission-equipped-cars-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.moderndriveline.com\/resources\/manual-transmission-equipped-cars-2\/","title":{"rendered":"TECH GUIDE: Manual Transmission Equipped Cars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"intro\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>When the car is equipped with a 3 or 4-speed manual transmission, the job is a lot easier than converting from an automatic. <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>There are two ways to install a T-5 transmission for a stick equipped car.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Use the original bell<\/span><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-37834 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.moderndriveline.com\/mm5\/graphics\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/t-5bellhousing_small.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"120\" height=\"92\" \/><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><strong>One way is to use the original bell housing and install an adapter plate. This will allow the clutch and clutch linkage to be used. An adapter plate is needed for two reasons. The bolt pattern is different than the four-speed transmission and makes up the depth needed for the longer T-5 input shaft. Make sure to purchase the correct adapter plate depending on whether you have a five-bolt bell housing or six-bolt bell housing. 260 and early 289 are five-bolt while later 289-351 are six-bolt.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Use a T5 bell<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #808080;\">The second way is to use a T-5 bell housing mentioned in the auto-equipped cars. This will eliminate the need for an adapter plate. However, the throwout lever needs a fulcrum adapter kit to offset the \u00be\u201d deeper T-5 bell housing with a mechanical linkage. Using the T-5 or TREMEC bell housing allows the option of installing a cable conversion kit.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Clu<strong>tch cable or hydraulics?<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-48894 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.moderndriveline.com\/mm5\/graphics\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/65-cable-shot-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"139\" height=\"186\" \/><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><strong>We highly recommend ditching the mechanical linkage and all of its inherent problems and converting it over to either hydraulics or cable.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Cable<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><strong>Clutch cable kits operate as smooth as a hydraulic kit at a reduced cost and are much smoother than the stock linkage.\u00a0 It also solves the problem of the Z-bar bending and popping out of its pivot point under heavy loads.\u00a0 When using a cable conversion, a T-5\/TKO clutch lever, throw out bearing, block plate and clutch lever cover will be needed in addition to the T-5\/TKO bell housing. The cable kit comes with a firewall support bracket to minimize firewall flex and provides a positive stop for the cable housing. The support plate is equipped with a tool-free cable adjustment. Stock clutches are made to operate with the mechanical linkage which moves the throwout bearing much further. When a stock clutch is used with either system, the clutch will not fully disengage. The manual cable will have to be replaced with an automatic cable.
