{"id":53588,"date":"2021-01-08T16:32:16","date_gmt":"2021-01-08T22:32:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.moderndriveline.com\/resources\/?p=53588"},"modified":"2021-01-08T16:32:16","modified_gmt":"2021-01-08T22:32:16","slug":"tech-info","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.moderndriveline.com\/resources\/tech-info\/","title":{"rendered":"HOW TO: Which late model Mustang rear differential do I have"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>\u00a0Here&#8217;s a little information on Late model Mustang rear axle ratios.<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-49524 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.moderndriveline.com\/mm5\/graphics\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/1994-ford-mustang-cobra-pace-car-EDIT-300x205.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"205\" \/><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><strong>1979-2014 Mustangs came equipped with one of two Ford rear endsFord 7.5 differential\u00a0 OR\u00a0 8.8 differential<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><strong>All &#8217;79-85 Mustangs featured the 7.5 rear ends.<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><strong>From &#8217;86-2010 the Ford Mustang 8.8 rear end went into all V8 Mustangs (5.0L, 4.6L &amp; 5.4L)<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><strong>The 7.5\u201d rear end went into all 4 cylinders (2.3L) and V6 Mustangs (3.8L).<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><strong>The &#8217;99-01&#8242; &amp; &#8217;03-04&#8242; Mustang SVT Cobras were equipped with an Independent Rear Suspension (IRS) that used the Ford 8.8\u201d differential.<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><strong>Starting in 2011, both the V6 (3.7L) &amp; V8 (5.0L Coyote) Mustangs used the Ford 8.8 rear end.<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><strong>All &#8217;79-04&#8242; Mustang Rear Ends used 28-spline axles except for the 2001 and 03-04 SVT Cobras \u2013 they used a 31 spline axle in their IRS rear end. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><strong>The 2005-2010 V6 Mustangs with a Ford 7.5 rear end used 28 spline rear axles <\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><strong>The 2005-2010 V8 Mustangs with 8.8\u201d rear ends used 31 spline rear axles. <\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><strong>For 2011-2014 Mustangs, both the V6 and 5.0L V8 Mustang were equipped with 31-spline axles.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><strong><\/strong><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Here&#8217;s something to note&#8230;\u00a0 If you haven&#8217;t owned your mustang since it was new it may not be equipped with its original rear end from the factory!<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><strong>Many things may have happened have transpired over the car&#8217;s lifetime that may have resulted in a Rear-End it did not originally come with.Here are a few things to help you tell the difference between 7.5 &amp; 8.8 rear ends.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION DOES NOT APPLY TO IRS EQUIPPED MUSTANGS<\/strong><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><strong>Compare your Rear End Differential Gaskets tin the image below:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><strong>\u00a07.5\u201d rear ends have two flat sides and two rounded sides where the 8.8\u201d rear end has four flat sides:<\/strong><\/span><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-53589\" src=\"https:\/\/www.moderndriveline.com\/mm5\/graphics\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Differential-Gaskets-300x151.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"435\" height=\"219\" \/> <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-48884 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.moderndriveline.com\/mm5\/graphics\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/2009-ford-mustang-gt500-super-snake-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><strong>When working with a Rear Gear Set, here are a couple of things to check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><strong>Measure the diameter of the ring gear. A 7.5 Ring Gear will measure 7.5. An 8.8 Ring Gear will measure 8.8.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><strong>You can also count the splines on the Pinion Gear.
