Clutch Cable

Can the T-5/TREMEC clutch cable be used on a four-speed bell housing?

Not at this time.  We are developing one.  Send us a note if you need one and we'll tell you where we are in the development process.

The clutch cable appears to be too short so the clutch lever can not be adjusted.

First thing to check is if the clutch lever is up against the back of the T-5 or TREMEC bellhousing opening. If it is, the clutch set that is being used is too tall. The stock mechanical linkage pressure plate places the lever height too far back causing the clutch lever to be pushed back. The mechanical style clutch will need to be swapped out for two reasons.  Lever height and throw out travel.  Mechanical linkage clutches require more throw-out bearing travel.  A cable operated clutch does not need to move as far and has a faster responds.  We offer a replacement clutch set for those who need a 10 long pattern bolt pattern when using a early stock flywheel.

Will the clutch cable kit work with all exhaust systems?

Modern Driveline clutch cable kits work with most exhaust systems.  Some long tube headers push one or two tubes towards the motor not leaving enough room for the cable to pass by.  The cable will clear Doug Thorley Tri-y, Hi-Po manifolds, stock manifolds, shorty headers and Hooker super comps when protected properly.  The important thing is that the cable enters the bell housing straight, not side loading the cable housing causing it to wear out or bend and is not damaged by heat from the exhaust.  Jet Hot coating the headers inside and out greatly reduces the exhaust temps and add extra performance and cool looks to boot!

The clutch cable has become damaged or burnt by the exhaust, can I get a replacement?

Yes, a replacement cable can be purchased if it has become damaged.  Proof of purchase is required as the cables are not sold separately to those who have not purchased a kit.

If I had a 1965-66 Mustang clutch pedal and wanted to install it into a 67-68 Mustang, do you have a cable kit for this combo?

Yes we do.  Give us a call @ 408-265-0741 and we will ship a customized kit out to you, at no additional cost or swap the clutch pedal bracket if you already purchased the kit from one of our retailers..

Why is the big clutch pedal return spring not used when installing a clutch cable kit?

When installing a Modern Driveline clutch cable kit, the only return spring that is used is the clutch pressure plate.  This is the same way the late models Mustangs are designed.

How do I know the clutch cable is adjusted correctly?

When the clutch cable is adjusted properly, there should be little to no slack in the cable. Most of the adjustment is done at the bellhousing end with fine adjustments made at the firewall.  Making the cable too tight will preload the throw out bearing and redue the disk clamp load.

Clutch

Which clutch is right for me?

That depends on how much power the motor makes and how the car is used.  If the car is used for daily driving and makes under 300hp, then a stock 10" or 10.5" will work great.  If the car makes over 300hp then a dual friction Kevlar/organic is a better choice for spirited street driving and track duty.  Full Kevlar clutches are great for super charged, higher horsepower levels +400hp.  Works very well on the street and perfect on the track.

Does a full Kevlar clutch wear well and is smooth operating?

A high quality Kevlar disk like the one offered by Superior Clutch has a 2x to 3x service life over what you will get out of an organic disk.  Superior Clutches are very smooth operating clutches even on aluminum flywheels.   Kevlar does not bite has hard allowing more power to be applied without breaking gears.

Can I install a 10.5" disk clutch instead of a 10"?

You can if you have a aftermarket flywheel that has more then one bolt pattern. We offer two flywheels that have both the early, long finger pattern and the metric pattern for late model pressure plates.

How do I know which flywheel imbalance I need for the motor I am installing?

All stock 289 and 351 use a 28oz imbalance.  All 302 dated 1981 and earlier use a 28oz imbalance.  302/5.0L dated 1982 and later are 50oz imbalanced.

Will a later model T-5/TREMEC bellhousing work with a 164 tooth flywheel?

No, it was designed to work with a 157 tooth flywheel only.

What is Superior Clutch better than other manufactures?

Each clutch is hand built and 100% QC for release and even clamping.  All clutches are zero balanced so it will not effect the balance of the motor.  All clutches are backed by a one year warranty.

Should I resurface the flywheel before installing a new clutch?

Yes.  If there are any grooves or hot spots and the machined marks are gone, it should be resurfaced.  It will prevent shattering and promote better clutch wear.  It will also allow the clutch to break in quicker while imbedding fresh clutch material on the surface.

Will my stock crossmember work for a T-5 or TREMEC?

No, the mounting point is much different and does require a crossmember made for each transmission.

Falcon

Will a stock Ford T-5 fit a 60-65 Falcon?

No,  the shifter is located too far back and will not clear the floor support.  A front shift T-5 is needed to place the shifter close to the stock location.  We offer complete conversion packages for this application.

Will the Mustang T-5 and TREMEC crossmember work in a Falcon?

No, you will need a Falcon crossmember.

General

Can I install a T-45 behind a push rod V8?

No, the T-45 bolt pattern is setup for 4.6L modular motors.

Will a early stock starter work with a T-5 or TREMEC bellhousing?

Yes it will.  A late model starter can also be used.  They are smaller and have higher torque.

Will I need a T-5 block plate (i.e. engine plate) when installing a late model T-5 or Tremcec bellhousing?

Yes, the bellhousing shape is different then that of a toploader or automatic plates.

Do I need to replace my drive shaft slip yoke when installing a T-5 or TREMEC?

Both T-5 and TREMEC 3550/II use a 28 spline yoke which is the same as a C4 and toploader.  T-10 transmissions used 25 spline slip yoke.  TREMEC TKO come with a new 31 spline slip yoke in the box ready to be installed.

Will I have to rebalance the drive shaft after installing the new slip yoke or shortening of the driveshaft.

It is highly recommended, as the parts are not always balanced.  It is best to shorten the driveshaft from the back half rather then from the front.  Any good driveshaft shop will be able to make these changes.

Is it possible to get an SFI aluminum bellhousing with lots of header clearance?

Yes we now offer a SFI aluminum bellhousing that is a stock 5.0l/T-5 replacement.  This same bellhousing can be used for Toploaders, 83-93 T-5, 94-95 T-5, and TREMEC 3550 and TKO.  Best of all the bellhousing only weighs 15 pounds.

How much oil do I have to put into my transmission, and do I ever have to change it?

A T5 takes about 2.75Qts and a TREMEC 3550/TKO takes 3Qts.  We recommend that you change the oil in the transmission once a year.  Check your service manual for correct fluid type.

Is there a break-in period for a rebuilt transmission?

We recommend that you avoid aggressive driving for the first 500 miles on a street driven transmission.

My transmission makes a weird sound when I shift.  Do I need to have it rebuilt?

It is very hard to diagnose a transmission without seeing it, so it is best to take the car to a local mechanic and have it checked out.  If it is determined that the transmission is bad, you can either remove it yourself, or have a mechanic remove it and then have us rebuild it.  If you remove the transmission yourself, plan on about two to three hours to remove.  You should also drain the transmission fluid before you remove it,  and be prepared because the transmission will leak a little from the output shaft when you remove the drive shaft (even after you drained it).

My transmission make lots of gear noise in all gears but fourth, what could be the problem?

Most likely the input shaft and lower cluster have badly worn gears and should be replaced.

My transmission is hard shifting into gear?

In most cases the problem is the syncro's will not slow the gear down to allow the shift to occur.  If this is allowed to continue the slide ring and gear will also need to be replaced.

I have a 289 in a '67 Mustang.  It may get stronger but never go over 300hp but might get to 300lbs/ft.  What is the best package?
For a little extra money the 375HP package contains a beefier transmission and clutch, but a 300HP package would also work just fine.

If I'm converting from a C-4, what else would I need besides one of your packages?
A clutch pedal.  We do not stock them, but occasionally we do have them, so ask.

How much checkout do you do on a transmission after rebuild?
We make sure it shifts good, there is no movement in the shafts, and there is no noises.  All parts are inspected before going into the tranny.

Shipping

Can I ship my transmission by UPS?

Yes, UPS will ship boxes up to 150 pounds.

How long does it take to receive a kit?
We ship via UPS ground.  Cross country shipments take 7-10 days.  West coast shipments 2-5 days.  Express shipments are available for an extra charge.

Do you assemble packages from parts-on-hand or is there a long lead time?
We stock lots of new and used parts.  We often ship same or next day.  Only our remanufactured transmissions are built to order and require one to three weeks.

T5

Does the driveshaft have to be shortened when installing a T-5?

Yes it does by about 3/4" as the T-5 has a longer input shaft.  It is always best to measure your exact need before having the driveshaft shortened.

Which mount is used to install a T-5 or TREMEC in an early mustang?

C4 or toploader mount.

Which type of oil is used in a World Class T-5?

ATF oil.

Which type of oil is used in a Non World Class T-5?

70w gear oil, as there are no bearings under each gear and the syncro's are bronze.

What is a front shift T-5 and what can I use it in?

A front shift T-5 is a customized Ford spec T-5 that we put together to retain the 10 spline input shaft and 28 spline output shaft.  It is ideal for hotrods, cobra kit cars, Falcons and 2wd Rangers.  We can modify any 2wd T-5 for this shifter location.

What does a steel front bearing retainer going to do for me?

All stock Ford T-5 except for the 93 Cobra and T-5z came with aluminum front bearing retainers. These retainers wear out from having the steel throw out bearing move back and forth until is it is very hard to push the clutch pedal.  New steel retainers can be installed as an upgrade and is highly recommended.

How can I install a T-5 behind a five bolt 260 or early 289?

The only solution at this point is to use an adapter plate that is bolted to the five bolt stock four speed bellhousing.   From there bolt up the T-5.

Can I keep the stock Mustang linkage and still use the T-5 bellhousing?

Yes,  We offer a fulcrum kit that bolts to the inside of the bellhousing that allows the original clutch fork to be used.  This prevents you from having to use an adapter plate, and later, if you decide to switch to a clutch cable system, you can.

Can I use a 4 cylinder T-5 behind a V8?

A 4 cylinder T-5 will bolt up to a V8 bellhousing with a "special" bushing.  However, the 4 cylinder T-5 gearing is very low and is torque rated for only 240ft/lbs.  It is recommend that the transmission be upgraded with V8 gearing before being but into service behind a V8.  We can do this for you.

Can 5th gear be geared down or up from stock?

Yes, 5th gear can be changed from .68 to .73, .80, or 90.   .63 can be changed to .59, .73, or .83

TREMEC

Which type is oil is used in a TREMEC 3550 or TKO?

GM Syncroesmesh or ATF.  If the transmission is going to be used hard or operate at higher temps, 70w can be used.  In most cases this is for road racing only.

What is a TREMEC 3550II or TKOII series transmission?

Series II TREMECs are .83 over drive geared transmissions best suited for road racing when a tall over drive is not needed.

Can I install a TREMEC 3550 into a 65-66 Mustang without cutting the floor to get the proper drive angle?

No, the TREMEC 3550 and TKO are much too tall in the main case and needs more room to achieve the correct drive angle.  If the transmission is allowed to hang down, the case is exposed to road clearance hazards and will cause vibration, especially when decelerating.

Does Pro 5.0 make a mid shift kit for TREMEC 3550 and TKOs?

Yes they do.  It comes with a rear position cover and is a much better choice over the TREMEC stock offering.

I was considering swapping a mild 460 in place of a small block in a 68 mustang.  The car has a C-4 now.  Do you have a gearbox that will take the torque and a conversion kit?
Yes - What you will need is a TREMEC TKO with a shortened input shaft to bolt to a stock 460 bell housing.   You can order a scatter shield, if you can not find a stock bell housing, from McCloud.  If you are willing to do some fab work we can set you up with a clutch cable kit that you can use with a scatter shield.  We do not have a cross member for this setup, as it is not common, but again you can fab one up.
