T5 Five Speed Single Overdrive Conversion
The Mustang II driveline was completely different than anything that Ford offered before or since.
The bellhousing was made deeper with the starter clocked down the clear subframe.
The flywheel was reduced in size from 157 tooth to 143 tooth. Installing a T5 into a Mustang II is not hard but does require the right parts.
Installing a T5 into a Mustang II can be done using different bellhousings. Starting with the stock four-speed bellhousing, the T5 has the same transmission bolt pattern as the RAD 4 speed. Our T5 package has the correct long input shaft to reach the crank pilot and places the shifter lever in the stock location using the MDL offset shifter.
The T5 will fit in the tunnel without enlarging. Some trimming of the shifter opening is required.
If your clutch is worn, we offer the proper cable-operated clutch to fit the stock 143 tooth flywheel.
When the stock bellhousing is not available, a Fox-body Mustang T5 bellhousing can be used once the top reinforcement ribs have to be cleared.
The T5 bellhousing does allow for the larger 157 tooth flywheel with either a 10″ or 10.4″ clutch to handle more power.
Are you needing a scatter shield in your Mustang II?
We partnered with ‘QuickTime’ bellhousings and develop a Mustang II T5/TKO series scatter shield. The spun cone shape of the QuickTime belllhousing contours the tunnel with the fork and starter that are clocked the same as the four-speed bellhousing.
TKX Series Five Speed Single Overdrive Conversion
Installing a TKX into a Mustang II is tight but can be done.
TKX Five Speed Single Overdrive Conversion up to 750hp
For higher torque applications or you’re a ‘spirited driver,’ the TKX series five-speed is the latest offering from Tremec
check out these stats.
Rated for 600lb/ft of torque, will support shifting up to 8000rpm thanks to triple cone hybrid sintered synchronizers that the Tremec TKX has to make your driving experience the best.
The new end loading design makes for a stronger case with a new sleeker profile, eliminating top covers, that would have restricted room in the tunnel.
Above you can see the differences between the TKO & TKX cases
The TKX offers a little more adjustment approx. 5/8″ at the tail shaft vertically for the driveline angle. Perfect for Pro-Streeters who love to tuck the rear suspension up into their ride.
This can be done by removing the factory spot welds and relocating the support back.
A great addition to the install is the newly released Exclusive to MDL Flywheel for Mustang II item# MD-LBS148-28
TKX Five Speed Single Overdrive Conversion
The big brother Five speed. Perfect for those of you running a high-powered small block or big block.
Tremec developed the TKX to be as much of a direct bolt-in replacement for the wide pattern Ford Toploader and input shaft features.
For early Mustang is best to keep the standard length TKX input shaft to keep the shifter back in the tunnel shift hole. We do this by using a 3 or 4-speed bellhousing to TKX spacer or switch to a TKX bellhousings.
Modern Driveline Exclusive Solutions:
MDL offers a wide range of bellhousings for SBF, FE, 429 series blocks. Tremec TKX’s are offered in two gear ratio gear sets.
The TKX comes with a wide-ratio 3.27:1 first gear with a .72:1 OD. OR a close-ratio with a 2.87:1 first gear with a .68:1 or .81:1 OD.
For small blocks, the TKX will fit in the transmission tunnels with the use of an MDL TKX crossmember and standard top covers.
Since big blocks fit differently, it best to use our low profile top covers and low profile cross member for additional clearance.
