79-82 Mustangs

T5 Five speed

Since T5’s were not standard issue for the fox until mid-year 1983, one can install a T5 into the earlier Fox body Mustangs by swapping out the SROD bellhousing for the 83-93 T5 bellhousing.  Again, the spline input and out splines are the same so no need to change the clutch or yoke, however the crossmember does.  When converting from an automatic, the T5 is an excellent choice for engines under 450hp.  The T5 shifts great, light weight and the least expensive five speed.  The T5 will look at home in the transmission tunnel.

TKO five speed

It’s the take-no-prisoners gearbox that started a 5-speed retrofit revolution! TREMEC’s TKO series 5-speeds were first made famous by the 5-liter Mustang performance craze of the mid-1990’s.  79-82 Mustangs were equipped with either an SROD four-speed (Single Rail OverDrive) or automatics.  SROD used a new deeper bellhousing using a cable fork with a wide pattern “toploader” bolt pattern.  If your Mustang has an SROD a TKO series five-speed will bolt directly to the bellhousing.  TKO500 has the same 10-spline input shaft so no need to change clutches.  The close-ratio TKO600 five-speed has a 26-spline input shaft, this would be the perfect time to install a 10.4″ clutch and flywheel package.  MDL offers both cast and lightens billet steel flywheels with the 10.4″ metric pattern and a complete line of in-house-built clutches.  The TKO will fits into the tunnel without any issues, but the cross-member and slip yoke will have to change out.  Shifter location is the same. TKO is an excellent choice for those that are running over 450hp and up to 800hp

T-56 Magnum Six-speed

The centerpiece of TREMEC’s high-performance line-up, the Magnum 6-speed takes state-of-the-art OEM technology and pairs it with the most popular flexibility features of the all-business TKO. The result is a double-overdrive transmission that easily tolerates up to 700 lb.-ft. of torque.  The Magnum is a perfect choice for those that want the best and use Mustang in many different activates.  Since the T56 does use a unique bolt pattern, a T56 bellhousing is required for install.  Being the largest of the transmissions we offer, it still fits perfectly in the transmission tunnel with the proper supporting parts.  The stock clutch cable and flywheel can be retained but the clutch needs to be replaced.  The clutch fork is clocked lower, so if a large quart oil T- pan would interfere, therefore, it would be advised to look at our LF (Light Foot) series, Fox hydraulic conversion kit.

83-93 Mustangs

T5 Five speed

Ford in 83, 84 installed Non-World class T5, it was not until 1985 the first World-class T-5 was issued by Borg-Warner.  All V8 Mustang T5 first gear ratios were 3.35:1, great to get the Mustang moving, but were not designed strength and performance.  Fast Forward to today, Tremec now offers a Super duty model known as the T5 with it 2.95:1 ratio first gear.  The T5 is a one for one swap for the existing T-5 with no other changes needed.  Rated at 330ft/lbs., the T5 can handle up to 450hp on street tires. When paired with a 3.55:1 ratio axle the T5z works great on the street, and motor-sports events.  With a bump in ratio, from the stock .68:1 overdrive to the T5 .63:1 overdrive RPM will be reduced an additional 5%.
MDL offers an optional .73:1 ratio for those that wish to make a close-ratio five-speed.  When making more power, MDL recommends calling to discuss your planned usage of your car to help you select the right clutch.
