79-82 Mustangs
T5 Five-speed
Since T5s were not a standard issue for Fox bodies until mid-year 1983
one can install a T5 into the earlier Fox-body Mustangs by swapping out the SROD bellhousing for the 83-93 T5 bellhousing.
Again, the spline input and out splines are the same so no need to change the clutch or yoke, however, the cross member does.
When converting from an automatic, the T5 is an excellent choice for engines under 450hp.
The T5 shifts great, is lightweight, and is the least expensive five-speed.
The T5 will look at home in the transmission tunnel.
T56 Magnum Six-speed
The centerpiece of TREMEC’s high-performance line-up, the Magnum 6-speed takes state-of-the-art OEM technology and pairs it with the most popular flexibility features of the all-business TKX.
The result is a double-overdrive transmission that easily tolerates up to 700 lb.-ft. of torque.
The Magnum is the perfect choice for those who want the best and use Mustang in many different activities.
Since the T56 does use a unique bolt pattern, a T56 bellhousing is required for installation. Being the largest of the transmissions we offer, it still fits perfectly in the transmission tunnel with the proper supporting parts.
The stock clutch cable and flywheel can be retained but the clutch needs to be replaced. The clutch fork is clocked lower, so if a large quart oil T-pan would interfere, it would be advised to look at our LF (Light Foot) series, Fox hydraulic conversion kit.

83-93 Mustangs
T5 Five-speed
Ford in 83, 84 installed Non-World class T5, it was not until 1985 that Borg-Warner issued the first World-class T5.
All V8 Mustang T5 first gear ratios were 3.35:1, great for moving the Mustang, but were not designed for strength and performance.
Fast Forward to today, Tremec offers a Super-duty model known as the T5 with a 2.95:1 ratio first gear.
The T5 is a one-for-one swap for the existing T5 with no other changes needed.
Rated at 330ft/lbs., the T5 can handle up to 450hp on street tires.
When paired with a 3.55:1 ratio axle the T5z works great on the street and motor-sports events.
With a bump in ratio, from the stock .68:1 overdrive to the T5 .63:1 overdrive RPM will be reduced an additional 5%.
MDL offers an optional .73:1 ratio for those who wish to make a close-ratio five-speed.
When making more power, MDL recommends calling to discuss your planned usage of your car to help you select the right clutch.
