Description
When your Non-World Class T5 starts grinding gears or leaking fluid, this master rebuild kit provides everything you need to restore factory shift quality and seal integrity. The NWC T5 was Ford's first 5-speed offering in 1983-1984 V8 Mustangs and Capris, delivering a significant upgrade over the previous 4-speed with its 2.95:1 first gear and 0.68 overdrive ratio. This kit is specifically designed for those early transmissions -- it will not fit the later World Class units introduced in 1985.
The Non-World Class T5 differs significantly from its World Class successor. NWC transmissions feature 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears riding directly on a solid output shaft with deep oil grooves rather than on roller bearings. The countergear spins on straight cylindrical bearings with a thrust washer in front for load support. This kit includes the correct bronze synchro rings sized specifically for the NWC design -- these are not interchangeable with World Class fiber-lined rings.
Every wear component that typically needs replacement during a thorough overhaul is included: all new seals prevent the fluid loss that plagues aging transmissions, fresh gaskets ensure proper sealing surfaces, and new main roller bearings restore smooth operation. The comprehensive small parts kit covers every snap ring, thrust washer, and needle bearing you will encounter during disassembly. Note: NWC T5 transmissions originally specified Dexron II fluid, but since that formulation is no longer available, TREMEC now recommends 50W gear oil for these units.
This kit fits V8 Non-World Class T5 transmissions only. It does not fit 4-cylinder T5 variants (which have different input shaft dimensions and lower torque ratings) or Cobra-spec units. If you are unsure whether you have a World Class or Non-World Class T5, check the synchro rings through the fill plug -- gold/bronze rings indicate NWC, while black fiber-lined rings indicate World Class.
