Description
The 1968 Camaro used a unique console shift plate design exclusive to that model year. Unlike the '67 and '69 setups, the '68 manual transmission console incorporated a sliding mechanism beneath the shift plate that moves with the shifter handle. This plastic slider retainer is the component that secures that slider plate assembly to the console shift plate itself.
The slider plate sits beneath the console shift plate, surrounding the shifter handle opening, and serves as a barrier to prevent coins, debris, and small objects from falling into the console cavity during gear changes. The retainer holds this sliding barrier in position while still allowing it to move freely with shifter travel. Without the retainer, the slider cannot be properly mounted and the console loses its factory-correct function.
This reproduction plastic retainer restores the complete console shift plate assembly on 1968 Camaro models equipped with 3-speed or 4-speed manual transmissions. An essential piece for correct restoration of your first-gen console.
