Description
Five and six-speed manual transmission swaps in Fox-body Mustangs present a unique challenge: you need both electronic speed sensing for the EEC-IV computer and cruise control, plus a mechanical cable drive for the factory speedometer. This dual-function vehicle speed sensor (VSS) solves both requirements in a single unit, eliminating the need for separate electronic and mechanical speed sensing solutions.
The sensor uses a variable-reluctance pickup coil design that generates an AC voltage sine wave proportional to vehicle speed, delivering a consistent 8,000 pulses-per-mile signal through its two-pin connector. This output feeds the EEC-IV powertrain control module for fuel and transmission management while simultaneously driving the cruise control system. The snap-in cable drive mechanism on the opposite end accepts standard T5 speedometer drive gears, allowing you to retain your factory cable-driven speedometer without modification.
Built to OEM Ford specification E9TZ-9E731-A (Motorcraft DY-587), this sensor was original equipment on all Fox-body Mustangs equipped with cruise control. The design installs directly into the T5 speedometer drive location, making it ideal for T5 and TKO conversions where both analog speedometer cable drive and electronic speed sensing are required.
Compatible with Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles from 1983-1993, this sensor works anywhere you need to bridge the gap between cable-driven instrumentation and modern electronic engine management.
