Description
Bellhousing misalignment is one of the most overlooked causes of drivetrain problems. When the bellhousing register bore is not concentric with the crankshaft centerline within 0.005 inch, the transmission input shaft is forced out of alignment with the pilot bearing -- leading to hard shifting, premature pilot bearing wear, transmission mainshaft bearing damage, and clutch disc hub failure. These Lakewood offset dowel pins correct that misalignment at the source.
These pins feature a 0.625-inch outer diameter to match the standard GM block specification and a 0.021-inch offset designed for moderate to severe misalignment conditions. The offset you need is always half of your total indicator runout -- so if your dial indicator shows 0.042 inch TIR, these 0.021-inch offset dowels are the correct choice. Centerless grinding ensures a precise, interference fit in the block.
The extra-long design accommodates block plates (scatter shields) without sacrificing engagement depth. Installation requires marking the high-spot orientation on the bellhousing bore, then pressing the pins into the block with the offset positioned to counteract the measured misalignment direction. Both pins must be clocked identically for the bellhousing to seat properly.
Proper bellhousing alignment extends the life of your pilot bearing, clutch, and transmission. For any serious GM drivetrain build -- whether small-block, big-block, or LS -- taking the time to dial in your bellhousing with the correct offset dowels pays dividends in reliability and shift quality.
