Description
When your Ford 4.6L or 5.0L modular engine is making serious power, OEM-style clutches and their stamped steel pressure plates become the weak link. The Tilton ST-246 was designed from the ground up as a true performance twin-disc clutch -- not an OEM-type stamped steel pressure plate with a floater tacked on. Tilton Engineering has been the leading supplier of small-diameter racing clutches since 1972, winning championships in F1, NASCAR, IMSA, IndyCar, SCCA, Formula Drift, and SCORE. That racing pedigree is engineered directly into this street-capable assembly.
The aluminum clutch cover shares technology from Tilton's championship-winning OT-Series racing clutches, delivering superior strength and stiffness compared to stamped steel alternatives. The high-mass pressure plate and floater plate are machined from the same proprietary materials used in Tilton's racing clutches, providing exceptional heat capacity and warpage resistance under sustained high-torque loads. The floater plate is twice the thickness of most competing twin-disc designs, which allows for the sprung-hub disc configuration, eliminates gear chatter, and provides dramatically better heat dissipation. Heavy-duty straps connecting the plates to the cover eliminate the noise and inconsistent engagement plaguing lesser twin-disc designs.
This assembly's dual 246mm organic discs with sprung center hubs deliver 850 lb-ft capacity while dampening engine vibrations and reducing gearbox noise for smooth street engagement. The chromoly steel flywheel features an integrated 164-tooth ring gear and precision register that locates the clutch for optimal balance -- a critical upgrade over the loose-fitting bolts and dowels used with stamped steel clutches. Fits Ford 4.6L and 5.0L modular engines with 8-bolt crank flanges. The 26-spline x 1-1/8-inch hub works with TREMEC TKO, TKX, T56 Magnum, and Magnum XL transmissions. Note: TREMEC transmission models 11010, 11011, and 16884 require the guide tube to be trimmed 0.5 inches to prevent disc interference. Magnum XL applications require hydraulic kit MD-900-2505-A, hose, and fitting (sold separately). Does not include pilot bearing or throwout bearing. Made in the USA.
