Description
The factory MT-82 and TR-3650 transmissions in 2005-2019 Mustangs are notorious weak points that fail under power and deliver vague, rubbery shift feel through their semi-remote shifter setups. The TREMEC Magnum XL 6-speed is built from the proven OEM TR-6060 foundation and engineered specifically to replace these weak factory units when serious performance improvements are demanded. Modern Driveline was the first company to install a Magnum XL into both V8 and V6 Mustangs and offers the most comprehensive knowledge and parts in the industry.
The defining upgrade is the extended-length tail section that positions the shifter directly on the transmission case. A rigid direct-mount aluminum shifter delivers vastly improved performance and lightning-quick shifts compared to the binding-prone factory semi-remote setup. The 2.66 close-ratio gear set delivers optimized spacing for high-horsepower builds, with double overdrive ratios (.80 fifth and .63 sixth) that keep forced induction engines in their powerband while providing highway-friendly cruising RPMs.
Engineering highlights include 85mm center distance gearing with substantially increased face widths and 2-piece laser-beam welded construction for greater control of tooth angles, pitch, and alignment. Triple cone synchronizers on gears 1-4 and double cone synchronizers on gears 5-6 plus reverse enable accurate, smooth high-RPM shifts. The included SFI 6.1 certified steel scatterproof bellhousing meets safety standards for competition use, while the swap-specific crossmember and OE-quality rubber transmission mount ensure direct-fit installation.
This complete swap kit fits 2005-2019 S197 and S550 Mustangs and requires a 26-spline clutch disc and one-piece driveshaft (sold separately). The kit reuses the OEM hydraulic clutch release system for simplified installation. 2005-2010 applications are direct plug-and-play for speedometer function, while 2011+ models may require speedometer recalibration via ECU tuning or signal converter. Uses Dexron III ATF. MDL extends the manufacturer's warranty for an additional year from the date of installation, and all products are backed by lifetime technical support.
