    Description

    Classic GM A-Body muscle cars deserve a modern five-speed overdrive, but TREMEC's factory shifter locations don't work with original console configurations. MDL solves this fitment problem with a precision in-house modification that repositions the shifter stub 1.0" or 1.5" backward, placing it exactly where your factory shifter sat. This isn't a bolt-on adapter or generic relocation kit - it's a carefully machined transmission modification that integrates new components directly into the TKX case, available only through MDL.

    The base transmission is the TREMEC TCET18083 wide-ratio TKX, purpose-built for the aftermarket with 600 lb-ft torque capacity and 7,500 RPM shift capability. The wide-ratio gear set (3.27, 1.98, 1.34, 1.00, 0.72) delivers strong low-end acceleration while the 0.72 overdrive fifth gear drops engine RPM for highway cruising. The TKX features sintered carbon/bronze hybrid triple cone synchronizers with a non-leading tooth profile for crisp, high-RPM shifts without grinding or gear clash.

    TREMEC engineered the TKX from the ground up as an aftermarket transmission with a compact, end-loaded design that clears most transmission tunnels without floor modifications. The ribbed three-piece aluminum housing provides structural stiffness while keeping weight down. All gears and shafts are made from ASTM 4615 special grade steel for maximum torque capacity, and tapered roller bearings on the input, output, and counter shafts reduce noise and improve durability. A single-piece countershaft design further increases strength.

    This modified TKX fits Chevelle, GTO, LeMans, 442, Buick GS, and Malibu applications - specifically BOP vehicles being upgraded from 3 or 4-speed manual transmissions, or those with automatic or blank floor consoles. The GM-spec pilot tip (0.590") and 1.375" OD throwout bearing guide tube mate to GM close-pattern bellhousings. Uses Dexron III ATF with 2.7-quart capacity. Every modified TKX is hand-built at MDL's facility in Caldwell, Idaho, with lifetime technical support.
