Description
This MDL-modified TREMEC TKX solves the shifter placement problem that plagues many classic GM conversions. The custom 1" or 1.5" backward offset shift stub positions your shifter lever exactly where it needs to be - no guesswork, no cutting, no clearance headaches. The narrow shift body design clears factory shifter holes without enlarging them, taking all the worry out of your manual transmission swap.
Built on TREMEC's TKX platform, this transmission delivers serious performance with 600 lb-ft torque capacity and 8,000 RPM capability. The close-ratio gear set (2.87, 1.89, 1.28, 1.00, 0.68) provides aggressive acceleration with tight gear spacing for spirited driving and road racing applications. Multi-cone synchronizers with hybrid sintered bronze and carbon rings enable safe, smooth shifts at 7,500 RPM - eliminating the notchy feel of older five-speed designs.
The TKX's end-loading case design creates a slimmer profile for superior tunnel clearance compared to older transmissions like the TKO. The ribbed, three-piece aluminum housing (main case, intermediate plate, and rear extension) provides outstanding structural stiffness with fewer seams. All gears and shafts are made from special grade steel (ASTM 4615) with oversized gear widths for increased torque capacity and extended gear life. The internal 3-rail shift system with steel shift forks delivers a robust, precise shift feel.
The 26-spline input shaft bolts directly to your existing GM Muncie-pattern bellhousing, while the 31-spline output shaft accepts Ford C6-style slip yokes. Both mechanical (7-tooth cable drive) and electronic (OSS two-wire analog sensor) speedometer outputs are built in. Fluid capacity is 2.7 quarts using Dexron III ATF or equivalent. This offset shifter configuration is an MDL exclusive - not available through TREMEC or other distributors.
