Description
Classic GM A-body builders face a common dilemma: the factory TKX shifter location doesn't land where the original four-speed did. This MDL-modified TREMEC TKX solves that problem by permanently integrating a custom close-ratio shifter assembly directly into the transmission case, repositioning the shifter stub to the front socket location. The result is a five-speed that shifts where your hand expects it - no awkward reach, no console interference, no compromise.
This isn't a bolt-on adapter or aftermarket shifter slapped onto a stock unit. MDL's technicians carefully machine the case, update internal components, and integrate new pieces to create a transmission that functions as an engineered whole. The close-ratio gear spread (2.87 first through 0.68 overdrive) keeps the engine in its powerband through the gears, while the deep overdrive drops highway RPMs for comfortable cruising. The TKX's end-loading design and streamlined three-piece aluminum housing provide the tunnel clearance that makes installation possible in tight GM A-bodies without cutting your floor.
Inside, hybrid carbon/bronze triple-cone synchronizers with non-leading tooth profiles deliver smooth, precise shifts at engine speeds up to 7,500 RPM. The internal 3-rail shift system with steel shift forks handles aggressive driving session after session. Tapered roller bearings on the input, output, and countershafts minimize noise while caged needle bearings support the mainshaft for long-term durability. All gears and shafts are manufactured from ASTM 4615 special-grade steel for maximum torque-carrying capacity.
Built for BOP (Buick-Olds-Pontiac) applications using the GM Muncie 3/4-speed bellhousing bolt pattern, this transmission includes a built-in reverse light switch on the left side and a cruise control safety switch location on the right. OSS two-wire analog speedometer sensor is built in, plus a Ford-style 7-tooth mechanical speedometer drive that can be adapted to GM. Fluid capacity is 2.7 quarts - use Dexron III ATF, TREMEC HP-MTF, GM Synchromesh, or Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF. Every modified TKX is hand-prepared at MDL's facility and verified before shipping. Requires separate purchase of offset stub for final shifter positioning.
