Description
Upgrading your GM A-body from a 3- or 4-speed to modern overdrive capability means getting the shifter in the right spot. The stock TKX rear shifter position doesn't work with original consoles and floor pans in classic muscle cars. MDL's custom side-shift modification solves this problem by carefully machining, updating, and integrating new components to relocate the shifter stub to the OE position where your original shift lever belongs. This isn't a bolt-on afterthought - it's a complete transmission rebuild with precision machining performed by hand at MDL's Caldwell, Idaho facility.
The foundation is TREMEC's TKX 5-speed, designed from the ground up specifically for the aftermarket. TREMEC engineered the TKX case to fit within the narrow confines of '64-'72 Chevelle tunnels without floor modifications. The end-loading architecture delivers a slimmer profile than the previous TKO while increasing case strength through a ribbed 3-piece aluminum housing. Hybrid sintered carbon/bronze triple-cone synchronizers with a non-leading tooth profile enable smooth, precise shifts at up to 7,500 RPM - no notchy gates or missed 2-3 upshifts.
Internal construction matches the Magnum 6-speed: ASTM 4615 special-grade steel gears and shafts, single-piece countershaft, and an internal 3-rail shift system with steel shift forks. Tapered roller bearings on input, output, and countershaft reduce noise while caged needle bearings support the mainshaft. The rear mainshaft support bushing is positioned closer to the gearbox for improved support. Every mating surface seals with gaskets - no messy RTV or leak concerns.
This unit comes configured with the no-offset shifter stub for applications where a straight-up shifter position works with your floor pan and console layout. Wide-ratio gearing (3.27 first, 0.72 overdrive) suits naturally aspirated and moderate-power builds where you want strong first-gear pull and highway cruising capability. GM .590 pilot tip and 1.375-inch OD throwout bearing guide tube. Bolts directly to GM Muncie 3- and 4-speed bellhousing patterns. Fluid capacity is 2.7 quarts using TREMEC HP-MTF, Dexron III, GM Synchromesh, or Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF. Includes lifetime technical support and MDL's extended warranty when purchased as part of a complete conversion package.
