Description
The Ford Y-Block engine family powered Ford and Mercury vehicles from 1954 through 1964, spanning displacements from the original 239 cubic inches through the legendary 312 Thunderbird Special. Finding quality clutch components for these classic powerplants can be a challenge--most off-the-shelf kits use inferior materials or poor tolerances that lead to chatter, slippage, or premature wear. This MDL Superior clutch set delivers modern performance with period-correct fitment, engineered specifically for Y-Block applications where both street driveability and weekend performance matter.
The hybrid facing compound combines the best characteristics of two proven materials. Kevlar on the pressure plate side provides exceptional heat resistance and wear life under aggressive driving conditions, while steel-backed organic material on the flywheel side ensures smooth, progressive engagement without the harshness associated with full-race facings. This combination is specifically tuned for the 400 lb-ft torque capacity that Performance Street Plus applications demand--enough holding power for a built Y-Block without sacrificing daily driver manners.
The 11" long pattern diaphragm pressure plate delivers significant advantages over older coil spring designs. The diaphragm fingers provide progressive engagement characteristics and substantially reduce pedal effort, making this clutch a pleasure to operate in stop-and-go traffic. The 3-3/8" finger diameter is specifically sized for the mechanical release systems used in Y-Block applications. Every clutch disk is hand-built in MDL's facility, allowing complete control over quality and tolerances--each disk is double-checked for accuracy before shipping.
This kit fits Ford Y-Block engines including the 239, 256, 272, 292, and 312 cubic inch variants. Note that truck applications require a separate throw-out bearing (MD-406-16515) due to fork geometry differences. Made in the USA and backed by a 1-year warranty against manufacturing defects.
