Description
Ford's 385-series big blocks--the 429 and 460--were designed as luxury-car torque monsters, but builders have been putting manual transmissions behind them for decades. The challenge? Finding a clutch that can handle serious torque without requiring a leg press workout at every stoplight. This Superior Series Big Block Change Over clutch kit delivers 650 ft-lbs of torque capacity through an 11.5" long pattern diaphragm pressure plate, giving you the clamping force needed for high-power street and strip duty while keeping pedal effort manageable in hydraulic release setups.
The hybrid friction material strategy is engineered for optimal performance and longevity. Kevlar on the pressure plate side handles initial engagement heat and provides excellent fade resistance under hard use, while the steel-backed organic facing on the flywheel side delivers smooth, progressive engagement for streetable manners. This combination gives you the best of both worlds--aggressive holding power when you need it, civilized behavior when you don't. The profiled clutch fingers ensure even pressure distribution across the entire friction surface.
Every MDL Superior clutch disk is hand-assembled in-house to exacting tolerances. Double-riveted construction ensures the facings stay put under repeated high-load cycles, and each assembly is inspected before it goes in the box. The 26-spline x 1-1/8" sprung hub provides proper damping and matches common Ford performance transmission input shafts. This kit is designed for hydraulic throwout bearing setups--note that the throwout bearing itself is not included.
