Description
Stock TKX shifter placement doesn't work for every build -- especially trucks where floor height, console clearance, and driver ergonomics demand a different solution. MDL's modified TREMEC TKX with integrated front mount short body shifter solves this by relocating the shifter stub into the optimal OE-style position specifically engineered for truck applications. This isn't a bolt-on aftermarket shifter -- it's a complete transmission upgrade where the shifter mechanism becomes an integral part of the unit, precision-machined and assembled at MDL's facility in Caldwell, Idaho.
The foundation is TREMEC's TKX platform -- the slimmest high-capacity 5-speed on the market, designed from the ground up for aftermarket applications. The close-ratio gear set (2.87, 1.89, 1.28, 1.00, 0.81) keeps the engine in its powerband during aggressive driving, while the 600 lb-ft torque capacity handles serious horsepower. Multi-cone synchronizers with sintered carbon/bronze hybrid rings deliver smooth, precise shifts even at 7,500 RPM. The compact end-loaded design fits most transmission tunnels without modification, and the three-piece ribbed aluminum housing provides the structural stiffness needed for high-stress applications.
Every internal component is built for durability: ASTM 4615 special-grade steel gears and shafts, a single-piece countershaft for increased torque capacity, oversized gear widths, and caged needle bearings in all gear positions. Tapered roller bearings on the input, output, and countershafts reduce noise and improve performance, while the rear mainshaft support bushing has been relocated closer to the gearbox for better support. Gaskets at all mating surfaces eliminate leaks and simplify installation.
This Ford-pattern TKX features a 26-spline input shaft, 31-spline output shaft, and includes both mechanical speedometer output (7-tooth drive gear) and electronic speedometer capability via a 17-tooth reluctor wheel with OSS two-wire analog sensor. Fluid capacity is 2.7 quarts -- accepts Dexron III ATF, TREMEC HP-MTF, Amsoil ATF, or Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF. Not available through TREMEC -- this is an MDL-exclusive modification. Backed by MDL's extended manufacturer warranty (one extra year with a 1-year grace period) and lifetime technical support.
