Description
Standard TKX shifter positions don't work for every build. Race cars with custom consoles, tight cockpits, or factory-style bench seat configurations often need the shifter further forward than TREMEC offers from the factory. This MDL-exclusive modification repositions the side shifter socket to a front location with a 1.65 in. or 2.15 in. forward offset shift stub - a configuration you cannot purchase anywhere else.
The base platform is the TREMEC TKX close-ratio with its road-race-friendly 2.87:1 first gear and 0.81:1 overdrive fifth. This gear stack keeps you in the powerband through rapid-fire shifts while the shallow overdrive maintains strong acceleration on corner exit. Inside, sintered carbon/bronze hybrid triple-cone synchronizers with non-leading tooth profiles deliver crisp engagement even above 6,000 RPM. Special rail chamfers and ball detents in the internal 3-rail shift system eliminate the notchy feel that plagued earlier 5-speeds.
The end-loading case design gives the TKX its slim profile - critical for fitting GM A-body tunnels (Chevelle, GTO, Cutlass, Nova, Camaro) without cutting the floor. At 99 pounds dry and 23.75 inches long, it installs easier than bulkier 6-speeds while handling serious power. The 31-spline output shaft uses Ford C6-style slip yokes, and fluid capacity is 2.7 quarts of Dexron III ATF for simple maintenance.
This transmission bolts directly to any GM Muncie bellhousing pattern. The front socket shifter position measures 14.60 in. or 15.10 in. from the bellhousing face, placing the shift lever 1.65 in. or 2.15 in. forward of standard locations - solving fitment problems that off-the-shelf transmissions simply cannot address.
