Description
Competitive road racers and serious builders know that shifter positioning can make or break lap times and driver comfort. Stock shift locations rarely land where you need them in a purpose-built cockpit or custom interior. This MDL-exclusive TKX variant solves that problem with a side shifter rear socket configuration featuring a forward offset shift stub adjustable from 0.65" or 1.15" - a setup you cannot buy directly from TREMEC.
The foundation is the TREMEC TCET17722 GM TKX 5-speed, built from the ground up for aftermarket applications. The close-ratio gear stack (2.87, 1.89, 1.28, 1.00, 0.81) delivers tight spacing that keeps high-revving engines in their powerband through technical sections, while the 0.81 overdrive provides civilized highway cruising when you're driving to the track. Multi-cone synchronizers with sintered bronze and carbon hybrid rings enable clean, precise shifts at engine speeds up to 7,500 RPM - critical for competitive road racing where tenths matter.
TREMEC engineered the TKX case specifically to fit restrictive transmission tunnels like those in '68-'72 Chevelles and other GM A-bodies. The end-loading, three-piece ribbed aluminum housing provides outstanding structural stiffness while maintaining a slim profile that clears factory floors without modification in most applications. All gears and shafts are machined from special-grade ASTM 4615 steel with oversized gear widths and caged needle bearings in all positions for durability under sustained high-RPM abuse.
This transmission bolts directly to GM Muncie/Richmond 3 and 4-speed bellhousing patterns. The 26-spline input accepts any compatible clutch disc, while the 31-spline output works with MDL's aftermarket slip yokes. Shift location measures 18.37" to 18.87" from the bellhousing face with a 0.65" or 1.15" offset. Uses Dexron III ATF or TREMEC HP-MTF; fluid capacity is 2.7 quarts.
