Description
When your build demands more than stock shifter placement, this MDL-modified TREMEC TKX delivers. The factory TKX comes with limited shifter positions that work for most builds - but road race cars, autocross machines, and console-delete projects often need the shift lever exactly where the driver wants it. This unit features an MDL-exclusive side shifter with rear socket configuration and a custom 1" or1.5" forward offset shift stub - a modification you cannot get through standard TREMEC channels.
The close-ratio gear set with 2.87 first and 0.81 overdrive keeps your engine in the powerband during aggressive driving while the taller fifth gear provides reasonable highway RPM. Multi-cone synchronizers with hybrid sintered bronze and carbon rings deliver smooth, precise shifts even at elevated RPM - TREMEC rates the TKX for engine speeds up to 8,000 RPM with shifts at 7,500 RPM. The internal three-rail shift system with steel shift forks eliminates the notchy feel of earlier five-speed designs.
TREMEC engineered the TKX case specifically to fit tight classic muscle car tunnels. The slim end-loading design clears GM A-body tunnels (Chevelle, GTO, Cutlass, Nova, Camaro) without floor surgery - a major advantage over the taller TKO it replaces. The ribbed three-piece aluminum housing provides structural stiffness while keeping weight to just 99 lbs dry. All gears and shafts are machined from special grade ASTM 4615 steel with oversized gear widths for maximum durability under hard use.
The 26-spline input accepts GM Muncie/Richmond bellhousing patterns, while the 31-spline output handles high-torque applications with ease. Built-in provisions for both mechanical and analog electric speedometer signals simplify gauge hookup. Fill with Dexron-III ATF or TREMEC HP-MTF (2.7 quart capacity). This road race configuration is an MDL exclusive - not available through TREMEC or other distributors.
