Description
This MDL exclusive TKX addresses the precise shifter positioning demands of performance builds where the standard rear position doesn't align with your vehicle's console or ergonomic requirements. The side shifter with rear socket configuration combines the benefits of TREMEC's latest 5-speed technology with MDL's custom offset engineering to deliver the shifter exactly where you need it - positioned laterally 2" left from the transmission centerline with the socket at the rear, plus 1.65" or 2.15" of additional rearward adjustment.
TREMEC engineered the TKX from the ground up as a purpose-built aftermarket transmission. The close-ratio gear set (2.87, 1.89, 1.28, 1.00, 0.81) delivers tight spacing for aggressive driving, while the multi-cone synchronizers with hybrid sintered bronze and carbon rings enable 7,500 RPM shifts without the notchy, balky feel of older designs. All gears and shafts are machined from special grade ASTM 4615 steel for maximum durability, and caged needle bearings in all gear positions reduce friction and NVH.
The slim-line, end-loading case design provides significantly better tunnel clearance than TKO transmissions - fitting GM A-bodies like Chevelle, Camaro, Nova, and GTO without floor modifications. The ribbed three-piece aluminum housing (main case, intermediate plate, and rear extension) delivers outstanding structural stiffness while gaskets at all flanges eliminate fluid leaks. The integrated high-performance short-throw billet aluminum shifter provides clean, crisp shifts with road noise isolation.
MDL's side shifter modification positions the shift lever laterally from the transmission centerline with the socket at the rear position. The 1.65" or 2.15" backward offset stub solves complex fitment challenges where both lateral and fore-aft positioning matter - perfect for factory console alignment or custom interior layouts. This configuration bolts directly to existing GM Muncie and Richmond bellhousings and shares TKO mounting points for straightforward retrofit. TREMEC recommends Dexron III ATF, GM Synchromesh, or TREMEC HP-MTF fluid.
