Description
The TREMEC TKX represents the first 5-speed transmission designed specifically for the aftermarket, solving the packaging and performance challenges that have plagued classic muscle car conversions for decades. This MDL-modified version takes that engineering excellence further with precision offset stubs that deliver exact shifter positioning for console applications and tight tunnel clearances in GM vehicles.
TREMEC engineered the TKX case specifically to fit within narrow tunnel confines like the '68-'72 Chevelle, and MDL's custom modifications extend that fitment versatility. This side shift configuration with rear socket positioning allows the shifter to emerge exactly where your console demands. The 1" left offset combined with the .65" or 1.15" forward offset range provides micro-adjustability for perfect alignment with factory console openings and custom installations. The shift location measures 18.37" to 18.87" from the bellhousing face with an offset range of .65" to 1.15" - critical dimensions for dialing in your specific application.
Inside, the TKX delivers on TREMEC's promise of durability and shiftability. The ribbed three-piece aluminum housing provides exceptional structural stiffness while maintaining a compact profile that eliminates floor surgery in most GM A-bodies including Chevelle, GTO, Cutlass, Nova, and Camaro. Oversized gear widths, caged needle bearings in all positions, and all gears and shafts made from special-grade ASTM 4615 steel ensure longevity under heavy loads. The multi-cone synchronizer system with hybrid sintered bronze and carbon rings delivers clean, crisp shifts up to 7,500 RPM.
The close-ratio 2.87 first gear provides responsive launches without excessive torque multiplication, while the deep 0.68 fifth gear overdrive drops highway RPM for improved fuel economy and reduced cabin noise. This transmission bolts directly to any GM Muncie-pattern bellhousing and includes provisions for both mechanical and electronic speedometer drives. The 31-spline output shaft accepts standard slip yokes for straightforward driveline integration.
