Description
The TREMEC TKX represents a complete ground-up redesign for the aftermarket, delivering capabilities that leave older 4-speeds and TKO transmissions behind. Where brass ring synchronizers in previous-generation 5-speeds felt balky approaching redline, the TKX's sintered carbon/bronze hybrid triple-cone synchronizers with non-leading tooth profiles handle 7,500 RPM shifts with precision. This isn't an adaptation of an OE transmission - it's purpose-built for classic muscle cars and restomods demanding serious performance.
TREMEC's end-loaded case design creates the slimmest 5-speed on the market, with a streamlined leading edge that clears GM A-body tunnels - Chevelle, GTO, Cutlass, Nova, and Camaro - without cutting floor pans. The ribbed three-piece aluminum housing (main case, intermediate plate, and rear extension) provides exceptional structural stiffness while gaskets at all flanges eliminate fluid leaks. All gears and shafts are machined from ASTM 4615 special-grade steel for increased torque carrying capacity, while tapered roller bearings on input, output, and countershafts reduce noise with caged needle bearings supporting all gear positions.
This TCET18083 variant features the wide-ratio gearset with a 3.27:1 first gear for aggressive launches paired with a 0.72:1 overdrive for relaxed highway cruising. The front socket shifter position with 1" or 1.5" forward offset provides precise console alignment for GM applications. Direct bolt-in compatibility with GM 3 and 4-speed Muncie/Richmond bellhousings makes this a straightforward swap. The internal three-rail shift system with steel shift forks and billet aluminum short-throw shifter delivers clean, crisp shifts while isolating road noise.
