Description
Classic truck builds present a unique challenge: the factory shifter position sits higher than muscle car applications, and standard aftermarket transmissions put the shift knob in the wrong spot. MDL solves this problem with a custom-modified TREMEC TKX featuring a tall body front shifter that brings the shifter stub up to the proper OE position for Chevy C10/20 trucks. This is not a bolt-on shifter modification - it is a completely re-engineered transmission built by hand at MDL's facility through careful machining, updating, and integration of custom components. This exclusive modification is not available through TREMEC.
The TKX platform delivers modern five-speed performance with 600 lb-ft of torque capacity and crisp shifting at engine speeds up to 8000 RPM. The close-ratio gear set (2.87, 1.89, 1.28, 1.00, 0.81) keeps your engine in the powerband while the 0.81 overdrive drops highway RPM for comfortable cruising and improved fuel efficiency. Sintered carbon/bronze hybrid triple cone synchronizers with a non-leading tooth profile eliminate the balky shift feel of older transmissions, while the internal 3-rail shift system with steel shift forks ensures precise, repeatable shifts.
TREMEC engineered the TKX with an end-loading case design that provides greater tunnel clearance and increased case strength through its ribbed 3-piece aluminum housing. All gears and shafts are manufactured from special grade ASTM 4615 steel for increased torque capacity, and a single-piece countershaft further improves strength. Tapered roller bearings on the input, output, and counter shafts reduce noise while caged needle bearings in all gear positions optimize durability. The rear main-shaft support bushing is positioned closer to the gearbox for better support, and all mating surfaces are sealed with gaskets to eliminate leaks.
Designed for GM applications, this TKX utilizes the GM TKO bolt pattern with a 7.2-inch input shaft length and will bolt to GM close pattern 3-4 speed bellhousings. Features include a GM 0.590 pilot tip, 1.375-inch OD throwout bearing guide tube, Ford mechanical 7-tooth speedometer cable drive gear, 17-tooth reluctor wheel, and built-in OSS two-wire analog speedometer sensor. Uses Dexron III ATF, Amsoil ATF, TREMEC HP-MTF, or Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF.
