Description
Early Chevelle tunnels have always been the enemy of modern overdrive swaps - the cramped space forced builders to choose between floor surgery or settling for outdated gearboxes. This MDL-modified TREMEC TKX Road Race transmission eliminates that compromise. TREMEC designed the TKX case from the ground up specifically for aftermarket fitment, and this side shift configuration drops directly into your 1964-1967 Chevelle without tunnel modifications.
The "Road Race" designation reflects serious mechanical upgrades over previous five-speeds. The TKX borrows synchronizer technology from the Magnum 6-speed, using multi-cone synchronizers with hybrid sintered bronze/carbon rings that deliver smooth, positive engagement at shift speeds up to 7,500 RPM. The older brass-ring synchronizers in TKO transmissions felt notchy and balky above 6,000 RPM - the TKX solves that with carbon-fiber composite friction material designed for high-heat, high-speed operation. All gears and shafts are manufactured from ASTM 4615-grade steel with wide gear profiles for increased surface contact and longer service life.
The close-ratio gearset delivers the aggressive step pattern that autocross and road course drivers demand. With 2.87 first gear, you launch hard out of corners without lugging, while the 0.68 overdrive keeps highway cruising RPM civilized. The ribbed three-piece aluminum housing provides outstanding structural stiffness, and gaskets at all flanges eliminate the fluid leaks common on older transmission designs. Caged needle bearings in all gear positions reduce friction and improve durability under sustained high-RPM use.
The MDL side shift modification positions the shifter with no offset, placing the lever exactly where your hand expects it for fast, confident gear changes. This transmission accepts both mechanical and electronic speedometer signals, so your gauges work regardless of your dash configuration. Compatible with all GM small-block and big-block engines using a Muncie-pattern bellhousing.
