Description
Console cars, bench seat trucks, and custom builds often demand shifter placement that factory positioning simply cannot deliver. This MDL-modified TREMEC TKX solves that problem with a professionally configured 1" or 1.5" forward offset stub that repositions the shifter exactly where your driving position and interior layout require it. The rear-mounted, side-shift configuration moves the stick forward from the standard location while maintaining the structural integrity of the transmission architecture.
The TKX platform represents TREMEC's ground-up redesign specifically for the aftermarket, delivering 600 lb-ft torque capacity and clean shifts at 7,500 RPM. Unlike the older TKO series, the TKX's multi-cone synchronizers with sintered bronze and carbon hybrid rings eliminate the notchy, balky gate feel that plagued high-RPM shifting. The close-ratio gear set (2.87 first, 0.68 overdrive) provides aggressive acceleration for spirited driving while the deep overdrive drops highway RPM significantly for comfortable cruising.
TREMEC designed the TKX case specifically to fit within narrow classic GM tunnels. The compact, end-loaded three-piece aluminum housing clears '68-'72 Chevelle tunnels and fits GM A-bodies including Chevelle, GTO, Cutlass, Nova, and Camaro without floor modifications. The ribbed aluminum construction provides outstanding structural stiffness while keeping dry weight at just 99 lbs. All mating surfaces are sealed with gaskets to eliminate fluid leaks, and caged needle bearings in all gear positions reduce end play for long-term durability.
This GM-pattern TKX bolts directly to GM 3 and 4-speed Muncie bellhousing patterns, making it a direct upgrade path from factory four-speeds. The 26-spline input shaft matches common clutch disc configurations, while the 31-spline output shaft handles serious torque loads. Built-in mechanical and electronic speedometer outputs, reverse light switch, and neutral safety switch round out the factory-quality integration. Recommended lubricant is Dexron III ATF, TREMEC HP-MTF, or Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF.
