Description
Modern Driveline's TKX Road Race represents the ultimate evolution of the 5-speed manual transmission for serious road race applications. This MDL-exclusive unit solves the high-RPM shift quality issues that plagued earlier TKO transmissions - where classic brass ring synchronizers felt balky above 6,000 RPM - by delivering crisp, positive engagement all the way to 7,500 RPM shifts. Built on TREMEC's latest TKX platform, this transmission combines 600 lb-ft torque capacity with 8,000 RPM capability, making it equally at home on canyon roads, autocross courses, and dedicated road-race builds.
The engineering focus centers on the multi-cone synchronizers and hybrid synchronizer rings made of sintered bronze and carbon, which eliminate gear clash at high engine speeds. The 2" left side-mounted front socket shifter configuration with a 1" left, .65" or 1.15" forward offset shift stub places the shift lever precisely where road race drivers need it - providing optimal ergonomics for competitive driving while clearing console and bench seat applications. All gears and shafts are made from special grade steel (ASTM 4615), with wide gear widths that increase gear life and torque capacity.
TREMEC designed the TKX case specifically to fit within narrow and short tunnel confines, making installation straightforward on GM A-bodies like the Chevelle, GTO, Cutlass, Nova, and Camaro without tunnel modifications. The three-piece aluminum housing provides outstanding structural stiffness, while caged needle bearings in all gear positions and gaskets at all flanges ensure durability and leak-free operation. Compatible with GM Muncie/Richmond bellhousing bolt patterns, the TKX features a robust internal three-rail shift system with steel shift forks and tapered roller bearings on input, output, and counter shafts.
