Description
Shifter placement kills more manual transmission swaps than any other single issue. Your shifter lever needs to come up exactly where your hand expects it - not 2 inches back, not 3 inches forward, not buried in your console. This MDL-exclusive TREMEC TKX Road Race solves that problem with a precision side shifter front socket configuration featuring a 1" left, straight up or .5" forward offset stub that positions your shifter exactly where it belongs in GM applications.
Built around TREMEC's close-ratio 2.87 first gear, this transmission delivers the tight gear spacing road racers and autocross drivers demand. The 600 lb-ft torque rating handles serious power, while multi-cone synchronizers with hybrid carbon/bronze rings deliver clean shifts at racing RPMs up to 8,000. The aggressive 0.68 overdrive provides meaningful RPM reduction for highway cruising between events while maintaining the close gear spacing that keeps you in the powerband through corners.
TREMEC engineered the TKX case specifically for tight tunnel clearances in classic muscle cars. The slimline three-piece ribbed aluminum housing and end-loading design eliminate the floor cutting that plagued older TKO installations. Caged needle bearings in all gear positions and oversized gear widths deliver the durability that hard track use demands. The robust 26-spline input (1-1/8in diameter) and 31-spline output shafts handle the shock loads of aggressive clutch dumps and hard corner exits.
This transmission accepts both mechanical cable and analog electric speedometer drives, uses Dexron III ATF, and bolts to any GM Muncie bellhousing pattern. The side shifter front socket configuration combined with MDL's precision offset stub eliminates binding issues and provides the repeatable shifts that separate fast lap times from DNFs. This configuration is an MDL exclusive - not available direct from TREMEC.
