Description
The NV4500 has been out of production since 2007, leaving truck builders hunting for used units with questionable history and increasingly scarce parts. The TREMEC TR4050 solves that problem - a brand-new, currently-in-production 5-speed manual built specifically for light and medium-duty truck applications. With 600 lb-ft of torque capacity (versus the NV4500's 460 lb-ft), the TR4050 handles serious power while weighing 31 pounds less thanks to its die-cast aluminum alloy housing.
TREMEC engineered the TR4050 around a massive 109mm center distance and high-contact constant-mesh helical gears for maximum strength. The gear ratios deliver exactly what truck builders need: 6.16 first, 3.11 second, 1.71 third, 1.00 fourth, and 0.76 overdrive fifth (reverse: 6.03). That deep first gear provides massive torque multiplication for starting heavy loads or navigating challenging terrain, while the overdrive keeps engine RPM civilized on the highway. The counter shaft-mounted 5th gear synchronizer specifically addresses NVH in overdrive - no more highway drone.
Internal refinement matches the robust construction. Tapered roller bearings on the input, main, and counter shafts provide excellent internal stability under load. Needle bearings under the gears reduce friction and noise output. All forward and reverse gears are fully synchronized using carbon friction material, with double- and single-cone synchronizers delivering smooth, low-effort shifts. The multiple-rail internal shifter provides precise shift feel and positive engagement.
The TR4050 features an NV4500 bolt pattern for direct replacement applications. Quick Draw bellhousing adapters are available for Chevy small-block (305ci, 350ci), LS engines (4.8L, 5.3L, 6.0L, 6.2L), big-block Chevy, 8.1L, 6.5L Duramax, Ford Windsor, Ford Modular (Coyote, 4.6L, 5.4L, 6.8L, 6.0L/6.7L diesel), Mopar small-block (318ci, 360ci), Gen III Hemi, Cummins (R2.8, 4BT, 6BT, 5.0L), Isuzu 4BD1T/4BB2T, IH Scout, and Detroit 353/453. The 23-spline 6-bolt output pattern accepts late-model Jeep transfer cases (NP231, NP241, and similar Magna units). TREMEC backs the TR4050 with a 12-month/12,000-mile factory warranty, and MDL extends that coverage with an additional year from install date plus a 1-year grace period. Lifetime technical support included when purchased as part of a complete MDL conversion package.
