Description
The truck transmission market has been underserved since the NV4500 went out of production in 2007. Finding used units is difficult, parts are scarce, and the existing options lack the low gearing needed for serious hauling or off-road work with today's larger tires. The TREMEC TR4050 delivers purpose-built gearing in a bulletproof package that makes the old iron-case NV4500 look outdated - with 140 lb-ft more torque capacity and 31 pounds less weight.
This 2WD-specific TR4050 is built for Ford F-Series trucks and similar applications. The 6.16:1 first gear provides the torque multiplication needed to crawl through obstacles or pull away from a dead stop with a loaded trailer. The 0.76:1 overdrive keeps your engine in its sweet spot at highway speeds, dropping RPM 24% compared to direct drive. The close-ratio middle gears (3.11, 1.71, 1.00) keep you in the powerband whether you are working or playing.
TREMEC's engineering shows in every detail. The die-cast aluminum case delivers superior rigidity through its 109mm center distance design while shaving weight. High-contact constant-mesh helical gears eliminate the grinding and gear whine common in older truck transmissions. Carbon friction synchronizers on all forward gears deliver car-like shift quality with the multiple-rail internal shifter, while tapered roller bearings provide the stability required for 600 lb-ft torque handling. Needle bearings under gears further reduce friction and noise output.
The TR4050 bolts directly into NV4500 applications using the same bell housing pattern. The standard right-side 6-bolt PTO provision handles hydraulic pumps when work demands it. Compatible with Cummins 4BT/6BT/5.0/R2.8, Ford Windsor small-block and Coyote, Chevy small/big-block and LS, and Mopar small-block and Gen III Hemi engines when paired with appropriate Quick Draw bellhousings. This is an ideal replacement for the AX15, NV3500, NV3550, and NV4500 5-speeds, as well as NP435, T18, T19, T98, SM420, and SM465 4-speeds. Uses TREMEC-approved fluids: T-M99 Synthetic ATF, Synchromesh, or Dexron III ATF with a 3.7-quart capacity.
