Description
When your small block or big block Chevy build demands serious torque capacity without sacrificing street manners, the Tilton ST-246 twin-disc clutch delivers. Rated at 850 lb-ft with its sprung-hub organic discs, this assembly provides the holding power of a race clutch with engagement smooth enough for daily driving. The sprung center hub dampens engine vibrations and reduces gearbox noise—critical for street applications where you want performance without the harshness of a solid-hub setup.
Unlike many performance clutches that bolt a floater plate onto an OEM-type stamped steel pressure plate, the ST-246 was engineered from the ground up as a true twin-disc clutch. The precision-machined aluminum clutch cover shares technology directly from Tilton's championship-winning OT-Series racing clutches, delivering superior strength, stiffness, and dynamic balance compared to stamped steel alternatives. The high-mass main pressure plate and floater plate—machined from the same proprietary materials used in Tilton's racing clutches—provide exceptional heat capacity and resist warpage under hard use. The floater plate runs twice the thickness of most competing twin-disc designs, which eliminates gear clatter and dramatically improves heat dissipation.
The billet chromoly steel flywheel features a precision register that locates the clutch for optimal balance of the entire assembly—a significant improvement over the loose-fitting bolts and dowels typical of stamped steel clutch setups. The integrated 153-tooth chromoly ring gear matches early Chevy starters and eliminates the failure point of separate ring gear assemblies. Internal balance configuration suits traditional small block and big block Chevy engines.
This kit fits TREMEC T56 Magnum and TKO transmissions with 26-spline, 1-1/8-inch input shafts. Compatible with OEM release bearings for straightforward installation. Since 1972, Tilton Engineering has supplied small-diameter racing clutches to championships in F1, NASCAR, IMSA, IndyCar, SCCA, Formula Drift, and SCORE—the ST-246 brings that same engineering to high-performance street applications.
