Description
Dropping a T5 into a 1974-1978 Mustang II has always meant wrestling with bellhousing mismatches and adapter sleeves. This MDL-modified TREMEC T5Z eliminates the problem at the source: a custom steel bearing retainer machined to 4.850" outer diameter specifically for the Mustang II's unique bellhousing register bore. No adapters, no guesswork - just bolt it in and go.
Inside, this is a Z-specification World Class T5 with all the upgrades that designation implies. Tapered carrier bearings and main needle bearings reduce friction and ensure precise gear mesh, while carbon fiber synchronizer rings on gears one through four deliver crisp engagement and outlast brass alternatives. The Cobra-style pocketed input bearing handles radial loads better than conventional designs, and the steel front bearing retainer adds durability where it counts.
With a conservative 330 ft-lb torque rating, this transmission comfortably handles small-block Ford V8 builds up to 450 horsepower on street tires. It's also an ideal upgrade path for inline-four and six-cylinder Mustang IIs looking for modern drivability. The 2.95 first gear provides aggressive launch characteristics, while the 0.63 overdrive drops engine RPM by 37% at highway speeds - reducing heat, wear, noise, and fuel consumption. The 2" rear shifter offset places the shift lever exactly where Ford intended in the Mustang II cockpit.
At just 75 lbs dry, the T5 remains the most compact and lightweight TREMEC transmission available - critical in the tight Mustang II engine bay. Requires 2.75 quarts of ATF Dexron III. A 7-tooth speedometer drive gear is installed, with optional 6 or 8-tooth gears available for specific axle ratio combinations.
