Description
Ford truck Y-block builders face a unique challenge: getting the shifter positioned ahead of the seat where it belongs. MDL tooled up and designed this two-socket, front-shift T5 specifically for pickup truck applications, moving the shifter forward to a usable location in cab configurations where the standard rear position simply does not work. This is not a compromised car transmission -- it is purpose-built for truck swaps with the extended input shaft and Front position rear socket shifter truck builders demand.
The engineering centers on MDL's custom front-shift tail housing that relocates the shifter mount 13.00” from the front of the case. This model was designed to be adapted behind a Ford pickup Y-block bellhousing using MDL's MD-401-2105 adapter plate. The extended 7-7/8-inch input shaft ensures proper pilot bearing engagement in truck bellhousings while maintaining front-shift benefits. Built on the proven Cobra-spec T5Z platform, this transmission safely handles 330 ft-lb of torque. The upgraded internals include carbon fiber 3-4 synchro rings, improved synchronizers and bearings, steel front bearing retainer, and the Cobra-style pocket bearing. The 2.95 first gear paired with 0.63 overdrive delivers strong launches off the line and significant fuel savings at highway speeds. Setup for mechanical speedometer operation with the 7-tooth drive gear. This same transmission can also be used with a 1994-1995 Mustang T5 bellhousing behind a small block Ford engine, making it versatile for both Y-block truck and SBF applications.
MDL extends the manufacturer's warranty by an additional year with a 1-year grace period, and complete MDL conversion packages include lifetime technical support. Made in the USA.
