Description
The MDL Modified T5 with front position front socket location solves the space and gearing challenges of dropping overdrive into a Ford V8 flathead-powered '32 Ford. This custom front-shift configuration places the shifter socket just 11.75” from the main case front, positioning the lever exactly where you need it while the compact transmission platform tucks below the floor pan without cutting. The 2.95 first gear and deep 0.63 overdrive are geared correctly for flathead torque curves — strong launches without over-revving and relaxed highway cruising that drops RPMs, cuts noise, and extends engine life.
Built on TREMEC's proven T5z platform with Super-Duty upgrades, this transmission handles 330 ft-lb of torque — suitable for 450 hp streetcars on DOT-approved tires. Internal improvements include carbon fiber synchronizer rings on 3rd and 4th gears for smoother high-RPM shifts, Cobra-style pocket bearing for improved load distribution, a steel front bearing retainer for strength, and upgraded synchronizers and bearings throughout. The forward socket location makes this transmission ideal for hotrods and early Rangers where traditional shifter placement doesn't work.
An optional offset shift stub is available to fine-tune shifter position up to 2 inches forward or backward — contact MDL sales staff for details. The rear socket location option (13” from case front) is also available for '60–'65 Falcon and Comet applications. This transmission uses GM transmission mount MD-604-1102 (sold separately) and requires 2.75 quarts of ATF Dexron III. Ford speedometer drive with 7-tooth gear maintains accurate speed readings.
At approximately 75 pounds dry, the T5 is TREMEC's most compact transmission — fitting where others cannot while delivering smooth shifts, easy operation, and proven reliability backed by over 40 years of continuous development. Dollar for dollar, pound for pound, it remains the go-to overdrive solution for lightweight and moderate horsepower builds.
