Description
Ford Y-block truck installations present a unique challenge: standard transmission shifter locations end up behind the driver's seat, making comfortable operation nearly impossible. This MDL-modified TREMEC T5Z solves that problem by relocating the shift socket to the front position, placing the shifter approximately 8 inches forward from the standard T5Z location - right where your hand naturally falls.
The extended 7-7/8" input shaft addresses the deeper Ford pickup Y-block truck bellhousing requirements, working with MDL's MD-401-2105 adapter plate for a proper fit. With a 330 ft-lb torque capacity, this transmission handles serious power while delivering the drivability benefits of a 0.63 overdrive - lower cruising RPMs, reduced engine temperatures, and improved fuel economy on the highway.
MDL's front-shift design features a two-socket tail housing, giving builders flexibility in shifter placement. The shifter mounts 11.75" from the front of the main case, with optional offset shift stubs available to move the position up to 2" forward or rearward. Carbon fiber 3-4 blocker rings and improved synchronizers ensure crisp, reliable shifts, while the steel front bearing retainer adds durability where aluminum units would flex. The Cobra-style pocket bearing further enhances long-term reliability.
This same transmission works with 1994-1995 Mustang T5 bellhousings behind small-block Ford engines. For car Y-block bellhousing applications requiring a shorter input shaft, see model MD-552-0251-FSF. Uses GM transmission mount (MD-604-1102, sold separately). Requires 2.75 quarts of Dexron III ATF.
